Great infographic and story behind the battle for “linch pin of the internetttttt!!!” What about that crowd that rides the fence between designer and developer? With both disciplines changing/morphing/growing/splitting/etc. by the nano-second, how does one keep up with the flow?
Regarding furniture design, is there a split between designers and builder? I haven’t known many designers that couldn’t produce what they sketched / ideated. Different medium but relevant comparison? Where else does this battled symbiotic relationship exist?

Newspaper Gift Bag DIY from Repurposed Goods!
Yes, there are tons of Newspaper Gift Bag DIY’s out there but is there one as cool and concise as this??!? A bag that I picked up in Mumbai (FabIndia) encouraged me to make this Newspaper Gift Bag DIY. Trying to fit it onto a single page was a challenge that is still being worked on but I think it can be followed decently. Never-the-less, here it is…enjoy!

The Chevy Volt scares me.
First off, the concept vehicle looks nothing like what they are putting on the road….so then what’s the purpose of a concept vehicle that will never see the light of day? Second, haven’t American car companies learned their lesson from the Pontiac Aztec and its disjointed styling? The Volt looks to lack a design consistency OR an original electric vehicle brand image. Usually odd cars are defined by a design feature, the Honda Element looks like and Elephant (everyone likes elephants), VW Beetle looks like its smiling, and the Toyota Prius looks like it came from 2012, and the Mini looks like it should have 30 clowns streaming from it. On the other hand, the Chevy Volt looks like a hodge podge or design features with an organic Pontiac Aztec rear…great!
And the worst of it, its touted as an amazing electric vehicle when truly…it isn’t that amazing. It has decent gas mileage (give or take 37mpg) to make up for its measly 50 mile electric range. I am still more impressed with what the weekend warriors are doing with old Porche 914’s.

Yea, repurposing! (Damn that’s hot…and portable!)
repurposedgoods:

Henry Dreyfuss brought us the iconic bakelite phone and now these handsets are being turned into speakers…rather great looking repurposed / upcycled speaker set.

I understand differentiation and individualism but I think Android needs to control the diversity of industrial design and information architecture before they fatelly fragment themselves (I know, rather harsh.). That little green Android monster thing would look rather aweful in chartreuse digital camouflage. Also, how can this insane turn over of phones (both interface and physical design) support a consistent mental model? Henry Dreyfuss would be a little bit upset…

Go climb something this weekend!

“Take that pallet face!” Shelton exhorted at the dubious wooden fiend and its rusty nail accomplices.
repurposedgoods:

I have been tearing down some pallets for two upcoming events.
First off, a chair that RG is donating to a Knoxville Opera auction on November 6th. This chair is going to be rather posh; it will be sanded, painted with orange and white accents and have the opera logo on the back. The best part, it might just come with a wing glass holder! Very high class for such a low chair.
Second, RG will be showcasing its goods from November 26th - December 30th at the Indie Craft Fair Holiday Pop-Up Shop boutique at the Alliance Theatre (think Woodruff Art Center / High Museum). More to come on the goods being sold there!
Side note, Deek’s Humble Homes DIY book is awesome…review coming soon!
